Game Report 07.05.15 50SS Levy vs Sonnia

Game report - 07.05.2015

50SS Levy (daniello_s) vs Sonnia (Owen)

Deployment: Standard Deployment
Strategy: Turf War

Schemes: ALITS, Protect Territory, Breakthrough, Frame for Murder, Entourage

Owen brought:
Sonnia (7SS pool) - Cheruf's Imprint, Reincarnation

Francisco Ortega (who was actually Francesca) - Hermanos de Armas, Wade In
Samael Hopkins

Witchling Handler - Plant Evidence
2x Witchling Stalker
2x Guild Hound

I took:
Leveticus (3SS pool) - Tally Sheet, Desolate Soul, To the Earth Return
Rusty Alyce - Desolate Soul
2x Hollow Waif
Ashes and Dust - Scramble
Lazarus
Hodgepodge Effigy
Abomination

Owen picked: Protect Territory (revealed) and Frame for Murder (Witchling Stalker)
I took Breakthrough (revealed) and Frame for Murder (Ashes and Dust). I was hesitating whether should I choose Ashes and Dust as a sucker but on the other hand a model with helluva attack sitting close to the opponent's deployment area can't be ignored to long so I chose to take this Scheme. No pain - no gain :D

Table setup:

I won the deployment flip and decided to deploy first (along the closest table edge on the picture above).

Turn 1

We have moved forward towards centre of the table.
Guild hounds were lurking behind the dense area on my left flank and the rest of Sonnia's crew gathered in the more or less in the middle. I moved all my models closer as well - Rusty behind the wall, Lazarus closer towards the building followed by Abomination (who was furiously biting its bigger friend for an extra card).
Levi took a single shot at Witchling Stalker hiding behind the crate hurting him moderately.
Ashes and Dust used his insane speed and triple walk along the table edge - Breakthrough, 'ere we go!

I also moved one of my Waif closer towards Hounds in hope to kill one of them next turn.
In the meantime Sonnia and her buddies were so upset to see Ashes so close of them, so they killed it with the concreted effort - first turn +3VP for Frame for Murder for Levy.
Of course Ashen Core and Dust Storm were summoned - Storm moved to base contact with Core, dropped scheme marker and Innitiated Reformation aka welcome Ashes and Dust.

Upkeep phase - Levy +3VP for Frame for Murder; Score after turn 1: Levy 3 - Sonnia 0

Turn 2

Sonnia won iniative.
One of the Hounds moved back and dropped Scheme Marker.
The the onslaught has started...
Hodgepodge moved towards Levy, granted him Loyalty to the Coin and chain-activate his Master.
Levy channelled 3 times, killed one Hound and finished wounded Stalker which granted Sonnia +3VP for Frame for Murder. The good thing of those killings were the fact that 2 Abominations were summoned in the process (below is a picture of the Hound changed into the Abomination)

Other notable actions this turn were:
- Witch Handler charging summoned Abomination killing it
- Ashes and Dust dropping another Scheme Marker
- Sonnia killing Ashes for second time this game :D
- Moving closer again  to secure VP for Strategy and taking potshots which did feck-all thanks to low attack flips/high defence flips. By the way - Sonnia's crew loved the Defensive Stance for the rest of the game.

Upkeep phase - Levy +1VP for Turf War; Sonnia +3VP for Frame for Murder, +1VP for Turf War; Score after turn 2: Levy 4 - Sonnia 4

Turn 3

I really wanted to go first as I positioned Levy nicely on the left flank (can you see the Waif at the edge of the dense area on the photo above?). The bad thing was I had absolutely average hand (9 highest, 7 lowest) so I burned Soulstone to get some extra cards - 11 and 2. Could be worse...

Unfortunately Sonnia won initiative - so I re-flipped it and thankfully went first.
Hodgepodge did his trick again and after that Levy channelled again 3 times  and tried to kill Hound and punish the second Witchling Stalker. Hound died with terrible pain (and Abomination summoned in his place) but shooting at Stalker was a disaster - only 2 wounds were inflicted.
Damaged Stalker had a bad feeling (for a good reason) he won't last long so he charged Lazarus (2 damage + 1x Burning). Nearby Abomination felt sorry for its lad so it moved and put the Burning down.
Sonnia expected  hail of bullets coming at her crew so she put some Flames Wall.

Waif charged wounded Stalker but missed. That didn't impress Alyce at all so she took the job in her hand, charged Stalker and killed it. Of course thanks to reaping Stalker apart, Alyce, Lazarus, Abomination and Waif got +1 Burning each.

Samael moved and shot Waif hiding behind hard cover who was also on Defensive Stance - Red Joker on attack flip and Moderate Damage on the damage flip (all flips were on negative modifier...) was enough to kill poor thing.
All was left to activate on my side was Ashes and Dust. So I decided to go for fun (instead of cold logic...) and I charged Witchling Handler. I could do this as I already had 2 Scheme Markers in postion for Breakthrough on my right flank and on the left 2 Abominations were dropping another 2 Scheme Markers.
Of course bad things happen in Malifaux and I missed every attack...

Upkeep phase - Levy +1VP for Turf War; Sonnia +1VP for Turf War; Score after turn 3: Levy 5 - Sonnia 5

Turn 4

Sonnia won initiative.
Handler together with Francesca killed Ashes and Dust.

Ashen Core polluted heavily 6'' area around him which damaged nearby models and drained Sonnia's hand heavily.
Sonnia attacked twice Ashen Core (2 damage) and put a Flame Wall again.
Levi shot 3 times at Handler killing it and summoned abomination.

Samael killed Core (Red Joker again).
Newly summoned Abomination attacked Francesca and miss.
Because of Flame Wall Lazarus didn't do anything and Rusty Alyce moved and cast Reactivate on Abomination close to Francesca. Two attacks were completely failure but at least imposed Defensive tests from Abomination's innate ability caused some wounds on Francesca.

Upkeep phase - Levy +1VP for Turf War; Sonnia +1VP for Turf War; Score after turn 4: Levy 6 - Sonnia 6

Turn 5

Because of the tight result we knew it will be a decisive turn...

Sonnia won initiative.
Then she activated, 2x walked and dropped a Scheme Marker. After that Francesca activated (Companion) and charged Dust Storm killing it.

The good thing of this actions (good to Levy of course) was that Francesca ended up within Levy's casting range.
Samael retreated to keep safe distance from Levy and took Defensive Stance.
Abominations bit each other (and Lazarus of course) which granted Levi 3 extra cards.
Then Levy used a dirty trick - Hollow Waif moved closer to the Francesca/Samael and then Levy sacrificed her to get into base contact with her and in range of all remaining Guild models.

Levy started his deadly casting - he finished Francesca with two attacks (first attack was Black Joker, because why not?) and then attacked Samael but missed.

Lazarus used Autofire. killed Samael and hurt Sonnia.
I had 9 as the highest card in my hand only so Rusty Focused and successfully cast Reactivate on Lazarus who used Autofire again - this time on Sonnia and put her to the last wound remaining.

The game ended on turn 5.

Upkeep phase - Levy +1VP for Turf War, +3VP for Breakthorugh; Sonnia +1VP for Turf War;

Final score: Levy 10 - Sonnia 7

Some final thoughts:
 - Desolate Soul on Levy is amazing and combined with Tally Sheet + Hodgepodge Effigy gives almost free Abomination when Levy is ready to kill something.
-  Lazarus + Abomination is lovely combo also - extra card for a cost of 1 wound which is going to be healed anyway - yes, please!
- Ashes and Dust with Scramble costs fortune but it is worthy, believe me.
- I need to re-think taking Desolate Soul on Alyce - she is capable of killing something, that is sure, but I think I was able (maybe) to get one Abomination from her victims every second game. In conclusion I think that 2SS from her upgrade can be spent somewhere else (or just kept in the pool for extra cards/damage prevention/re-flipping initiative).

Till next time!
